Out of all the amazing special effects that have been created for the stage, the ultimate creation is also one of the oldest. The special effect allowed live people or objects to slowly materialize into a scene, and interact with the other characters on stage. The special effects name – “Pepper’s Ghost”.
“Pepper’s Ghost” is an illusionary technique which involves the use of distinctive lighting and transparent plate glass. When a large piece of glass is placed between the viewer and scene, the glass reflects a mirror image of what is hidden from the viewer. Fortunately, all the audience would see is a bare stage. The object can not yet be seen due to the fact that the hidden objects are not yet lit. In this case the objects off stage would be lit incandescently, causing them to merge with the on stage set and actors. For the illusion to work, the audience must be able to see clearly into the main room, but not into the hidden mirror room. The edge of the glass that is on stage is usually hidden by a designed pattern in the floor. When both the hidden stage and main stage are duplicates, objects can be made to appear or disappear at will.
